MK Food Champ

Calling all budding chefs: MK Food Bank Teams Up with The Holiday Inn Milton Keynes Central to find the MK’s next Young Food Champ.

MK Food Bank was delighted co-host the MK Food Champ final competition with the team at The Holiday Inn, Milton Keynes Central, that challenged local young people from years five to nine to design a creative two-course meal for four, predominantly based on items received in a Food Bank parcel.

Aiming to raise awareness of food poverty and food bank use among young people, this competition hopes to inspire and encourage a new generation of budding chefs to cook at home using basic, cheap and nutritious ingredients.

Judging panel (see above) on the day were Frank Purcell, Louisa Hobbs, Amanda Marlow, Sophie Etc and Kevin!

And an extended thank you to the parents and carers who attended on the day!

On Saturday 29th October we invited the five finalists to come to our launch event for their special recipes at The Holiday Inn Milton Keynes Central, where the dishes were cooked by professional chefs and served to the judging panel where one winner of a main and dessert were chosen, with the prizes being a family meal at the restaurant.

The Judges feasted their way through all the fantastic mains and desserts and struggled to decide the winners, in the end Matthew Taylor won with his Corn Beef Bolognese Hash which the judges loved!

And the winning dessert was Crunchy Peach Crumble by Connor Fraser, which was delicious!

The finalists all received a fabulous apron and goody bag for making such creative and delicious recipes, and both winners received family meal vouchers!

The Holiday Inn, Central Milton Keynes are making all the finalists’ meals available to taste at their open lobby restaurant every Wednesday 5 -7pm, fundraising for MK Food Bank, throughout the whole of November!

So please go along and try them for yourselves. and discover what our budding Food Champs made to celebrate MK Food Bank and help fundraise for us!

As more and more families struggle to afford essentials such as energy and food, basic cooking education and cheap, nutritious recipes are needed more than ever. We’ll be sharing some of the winning recipes as part of a wider education project soon, so watch this space.
