Welcome to The Food Bank Online

Hunger is not just a third world problem. Even in our prosperous new city of Milton Keynes, there are many people living on the edge of poverty and The Food Bank has been able to help thousands of individuals and families who have experienced a crisis of some type.

All it takes is a sudden, unexpected event – a bereavement, illness, redundancy or theft – to throw people into a genuine crisis.

National statistics show that some wards of Milton Keynes are within 10% of the most deprived areas in England. In one ward, the number of people relying on means tested benefits is 50% higher than the England average.

The Food Bank provides local families and individuals with essential food supplies at a time when they need them most, covering the days or sometimes weeks before other parts of the social care infrastructure can come into play.

Please take a look at the video clip to learn a little more about how we operate and some of our plans for the future.

Exciting Expansion Plans

The Food Banks has a number of exciting expansion programmes which, subject to funding, will see the following improvements achieved in 2010/11 so we can better serve our community:

  1. Get our warehouse up and running in April 2010 to enable the following activities to take place: Warehouse now fully functional!
    • Expand our service to include baby food and toiletries.
    • Increase the standard number of food parcels offered per household from 3 to 5 in a rolling 12-month period. Achieved!
    • Receive bulk food donations & distribute via various community groups.
    • Create a Community Room where local schools can bring groups of children to experience Food Bank first hand.
  2. Get our new vehicle on the road to enable the following:
    • Provide a delivery service to the elderly, disabled or housebound.
    • Launch a "Mobile Food Bank" so we can take our service out to parts of the city and surrounding villages not currently covered.
